HMS Southampton
Sunk on the 11th January 1941 whilst taking
part in Operation Excess.
The Luftwaffe Diaries gives an account of this attack where a squadron of Stuka's
guided by a Heinkel 111 pathfinder attacked at extreme range from Sicily (some
300 miles out).
The report states they attacked out of the sun & a bomb exploded in the
engine room, later to sink the ship.
The ship was disabled however but not sunk & with no hope of moving so the
decision was made to sink the ship in case it fell into enemy hands.
Reports suggest she was topedoed by Orion
(4 torpedoes) & Gloucester (1 torpedo).
I can find no photo of this ship. Help would be appreciated.
